AI Engine is a broad AI framework for WordPress that also ships an MCP server. WPAgently is the verified write path and nothing else.
The two products solve problems of very different size. AI Engine brings chatbots, content and image generation, AI forms and a knowledge base. Only one part of that is comparable, namely the MCP server your own agent uses to run the site. That part is what this page sets side by side.

What each product is good at
Of the products compared here, AI Engine is by far the oldest and most widely installed. WPAgently is new and covers a single job. These are two different offers, not two variants of the same one.
AI Engine
An established framework with a large user base
- On WordPress.org, AI Engine sits at more than 100,000 active installations and a 4.9 out of 5 rating from 857 reviews on 14 August 2026. That is a basis for trust a new product cannot show.
- Development continues actively. Version 3.7.0, current at that date, was released on 3 August 2026.
- One plugin covers chatbots, content and image generation, AI forms, embeddings and a playground. WPAgently does not attempt that range at all.
- AI Engine supports six providers, namely OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Mistral, Perplexity and OpenRouter, and you bring your own keys for each. WPAgently is built around Claude Code, Claude Desktop and Codex.
- The MCP server is already included in the free version. WPAgently Free includes 34 bounded WordPress abilities without a call limit.
WPAgently
One job, done with verification
- The whole product is the server-side check after a write. Content is declared as Markdown or a section list, and the server verifies that it turns into valid Gutenberg blocks before saving.
- For everyday work the agent runs as an Editor and not as an administrator. A preflight check aborts every automated run as soon as the account carries administrator rights.
- Every pipeline writes a draft by default. Publishing requires two explicit switches.
- After a write the server reads the result back, checks how it renders and reports any deviation. A failed bounded file or database operation is rolled back.
- Raw access to PHP and the database lives in a separate plugin that is off by default and that additionally requires a constant in
wp-config.phpbefore arbitrary PHP can run.

AI Engine has a free version that already includes the MCP server. The Pro licence extends the framework with forms, embeddings, further MCP tools and usage insights. WPAgently Free focuses on 34 bounded WordPress core functions. The annual licence expands this to the complete Companion and Power surface.

The figures cannot be set against each other directly. The AI Engine Pro price buys a complete AI framework; the WPAgently price buys a verified write path. If you want both, you can install both, because the products do not exclude each other.
Where WPAgently does not keep up today
A comparison that points in one direction only is not a comparison. These are the places where WPAgently is the narrower product.
- Both offer a free entry point. AI Engine Free provides a broad AI framework with MCP, while WPAgently Free provides a narrower verified WordPress workflow.
- More than 100,000 installations and 857 reviews are a track record WPAgently does not have as a new product.
- Six supported AI providers are more than WPAgently's focus on Claude Code, Claude Desktop and Codex.
